Readers Chime in on Gunsels, Gun Molls, & Private Dicks: "Good stuff, man! Fast and hard as anything published in the heyday of the pulps. Tommy gun prose. Carroll John Daly, for one, would have loved these stories and characters. Xavier Mason, particularly; he's a true grandson of Race Williams.' Bill Pronzini Author, 'The Nameless Detective Series' 7-22-2007 So many projects, so much to do. Blazing! is going into the 3rd issue of submissions next month, my novel has gained ground at the half-way mark, and preparations for next year's BoucherCon which should be very fruitful. Artwork for one of my most ambitious undertakings has pulled me back into the illustration part of my life. I get to learn digital painting. I've met a few good people through Blazing! and made a good friend in one writer who is a man after my own Pulp writing heart, Teel James Glenn, actor/stuntman supreme! I celebrated my 33rd day of life this long past 6/30 with a weeks vacation in NYC. Many a friend took part in my little gathering at Heartland brewery Union Square. I'd like to thank Todd, Allison, Bill, Marie, Bruce, & PJ for sharing my day. You've made this loner feel at home, with a true family.
until next time,
Robert S.P.Lee 1-1-2007 A New Year is upon me! From the birth of blazing!, to the death of FLASH IN THE GUTTERS, the constant evolution in a writers' world is sometimes a sight to behold. Omenspirits has been silent for quite sometime. An Ezine can do that. But 2007 will be the big push! I've a second issue of BLAZING to put together, with the addition of 2 more pulp genres & articles to add. And of course, there's always the 'novel' we storytellers toil over and over and over, until the damn thing is complete. I, am no different. But, success shall come to myself and my brother THUGLIT.com himself, Todd Robinson. This past year THUGLIT has been giving my brother the success he's deserved for as long as I've known him. From award wining stories, to possible anthology deals, to authors who've been published on THUGLIT, obtaining the golden ticket of a book deal, Todd has cut his own identity threw the publishing world like no other. That's what happens when you use the tried and true method of 'A BULL IN THE CHINA SHOP' technique. Mystery & Crime fiction being the china shop. More success for you my friend, I'm coming.

It's coming......
8-1-2006 Read my stimulating interview with the Mystery world's definition of longevity. A man who's career spans decades, longer than most authors can even speak. While others work on their 9th novels, this man is going on 32nd. Pick up a copy of CRIMESPREE magazine to get to know "The Nameless Detective" himself, Bill Pronzini.
A good man, and a good writer.

5-6-2006 Fun with Irishmen, Brooklyn-ites, books, & a fellah named Jim- The Dublin Noir Party (pictures coming soon) went off without a hitch ( with great readings by Ken (Bruen) Starr and Jason (Starr) Bruen, the dynamic duo of dublin (but, Jason's from brooklyn and not Irish? um...yeah...moving along). Yours truly got a chance to run his proposal by the ceo of Akashic books, Mr. Johnny Temple (whom I hope didn't feel too pressured into accepting it by Ken and jason's plug before they began reading excerpts from their stories in Dublin noir (Thanks for the vote of confidence fellas, you my peoples!) Oh, I didn't tell ya'll about my proposal? Well, you'll still have to wait. (It's still in the works, Shhhh...). It was great to see my good friends Bill Chambers & Bob Knightly (MWA Prez). Pat Lambe, a very good writer in his own right and a contributor to Dublin Noir (PICK UP A COPY DAMMIT!) was great to see (I'll let you know about that thing -pulp- when it pops off-).and breaking bread with the soon to be old man Jim Winters (Think about the Cat and the Gimp, man! You could be doing Opra for sure!). HardCase Crimes man in charge Charles Ardai was in attendance, and why not? BUST, the new Jason Bruen/ Ken Starr novel is out and it is a great read! ten stars! Always great to see a Pulp fiction lover like myself. CJ carpenter was not in attendance, which was very disappointing, I miss my little A.D.D. afflicted blonde chickie! She better show up at Jim Winters' B-Day party at XR bar Saturday (the 6th), 7 PM 128 W. Houston at Sullivan. Thrown by the Todd Robinson (my man fiddy-grand) and Ken (Bruen) Starr. I will have more in the coming months about my writing and the goings on. I've three irons in the fire.
...........................stay tuned.....

3-11-2006 Something new from the home of Omen. From my extensive search on the web (and the utter boredom one gets at ones day job) I've found a great site for flash fiction called Flash in the gutter. A great site where a writer can get published (no pay but what the hell, 700 words is not like writing war and peace, right) for your mental doodles. I've had the pleasure of seeing my work, 'The Hard Way' presently up for your reading pleasure. Click on the link in purple, and enjoy!

THE BOOK IS NOW AVAILABLE FOR PURCHASE!!!! 09/4/2005 Chi-town And The coming Omen....... I've returned! My latest venture into the world of mystery & crime was in the windy city ( & the name aptly fits) has come out as the best and most productive journey I've undertaken since becoming a writer. my collection sold very well, and I also compted a few copies to those that I felt would enjoy, or had in some way, helped me along in this quest of mine. The things I could tell you would take up so much space, so instead, Introducing the newest edition to the friends of omenspirits site, live video of the one and only, me, telling you the internet audience about my week in B-Con chi-town style. I'll split up the video by chapters and upload them new in three weeks to give the viewing audience a chance along with the new images of my friends and their panel discussions. My Panel will start the first week and so on. Eventually all videos will be able to be viewed. (*note: videos will be forthcoming: so will stills from my trip) My book is available only thru this site, the other option for purchase fell thru, which is understandable considering that the outlet is an Indy book store and I'm not a name writer. Hope you enjoy the video as much as I've enjoyed being the main attraction! Robert S.P.Lee 08/14/2005 As I wait For my Books....... To be delivered for you all to mass consume, you may want to stop over to WWW.THRILLINGDETECTIVE.COM to have a looksee of my first ever published article. I am proud to be a Contributing member to such an important site as Thrilling Detective, Kevin Burton Smith's lovechild and beast of burden, gives all of us an important chunk of mystery/ detective info that could be found in no other place.
CLICK HERE FOR MY REVIEW OF ANGELTOWN, BY GARY PHILIPS- it's coming down to the wire, but I'll be up and running them books soon. My full shipment has not come, but you'll know when I do. Also, I have officially become a revolving editor at the fledgling WebZine by my good friend TODD 'Thug' Robinson, over at www.thuglit.com where Todd and myself hope to continue the spirit of the hardboiled story as was set forth by the good gentlemen, Smith, grischler, Maviano, & Doolittle, over at PlotswithGuns.com, so for all you hopefuls and fans of the genre, crack out your laptops and submit!
06/26/2005 So many things, and just enough time to tell'em. One, the book's into its final preprint stage so that's going to be finally done. Now comes the fun part of selling it like the Fuller Brushman going door-to-door at this year's chi-town BoucherCon. But, I do have some help from a little thing called LUCK. Yes my friends, your favorite talker has finally been given his moment in the sun. At this year's BoucherCon, I've been selected to be on a PANEL discussion: Author signings will follow each panel. Thursday September 1 10:30 to 11:30 A.M. I did it Myself - The Plus and Minus of Self-Publishing Pat Dennis Yes, people believe it! The Omen has been given his chance at the podium, exposing my wit, charm, sophistication, refinement as a word smith, a bard, a publishing guru (look for me pointing to the sweat shirt I'll be wearing like the walking billboard that I am, "Hey, this is the cover of my book that I'll be signing & selling afterwards. You like hardboiled stories, then this is your book!"). Oh the pimping I will be doing will look shameful. So if you're among the valiant members of the mystery lovers genre, come and get an earful from me and my fellow travelers in the self-publishing game. The second thing would be the Omen Shopping Network. Once the books are in my hands the ability to purchase my book thru PayPal will be enabled. I take credit card payments along with direct bank transfers thru paypal so if you're so inclined come and shop! Tee-shirts will also be able to be purchased from this page. Once I get an order of at least 10 or more, I'll order shirts for those that place one. Price will vary as to the size of the order and shirt requested, but my starting price will be $13. Thirdly, I've just had the pleasure of attending my good friend Bill Chamber's OFFICIAL book launch in Brooklyn this past saturday. This time he was given the respect & consideration he deserves. A good amount of people showed up to share in Bill's day at the Polish and Slavic Center. I've taken some pictures (i'm not a shutter-bug so you'll have to excuse the quality) and I've taken this opportunity to try something new in the presentation of the pictures for the 'FRIENDS OF OMENSPIRITS' So give it a go. Things are moving rather well in this my journey of authorship, & I'm very happy about it. I'd like to take this moment to Wish a get well soon for one of my forefather's in the genre we all love, MICKEY SPILLANE. recently at his home, Mr. Spillane had a terrible spill and had to be hospitalized. On last information, He was back home and resting, only suffering from a slight concussion, which is not bad for an 87 year old hardboiler like himself. Please keep him in your thoughts. Only to've talked to the man twice, but the two times were a delight and a special occasion that always stay with me.
BOOK UPDATE* Gunsel, GunMolls, & Private Dicks Is almost official complete! I've got one more important matter to attend to and in a few weeks it should be a go. You'll be able to purchase said book from this site & from Black Orchid bookstore 303 east 81st street New York, Ny. And those of you making that journey to BoucherCon in Chicago, you'll be able to purchase from my charming book seller.....ME. I'll be hocking my wares as I travel around the convention. So if I come up to you and intro myself, asking you to buy a copy, then you'll know who it is..... 04/26/2005- THE Bill CHAMBERS AFFAIR Well, I made my journey back to Black Orchid, 303 east 81st street NY. As I was coming up on the entrance, there was a mob of people spilling out of the already tiny book store. I thought to myself, 'WOW, Bill had a great turn out!' and I was happy for him. Until I realized that, this also being Edgars week, that Donald E. Westlake was also signing books that day and they were mainly there for him. I was rather disappointed in that, but, what can you do. It really wasn't Bill's official book launch, more like a preview, but still.....okay I'm kinda biased when it comes to Bill. I want him to get the recognition he deserves. His name wasn't anywhere like westlake's, & he was signing books on people's cars......that didn't sit well with me. But, when his official day comes, it will be MUCH better. I've got pictures of course in the 'Friends of Omen Spirits' page of the individuals whom were there for both Bill and Westlake ( got my signed copy of BILL'S BOOK: THE TORMENTRESS AT LEAST). There's a great picture of me and Bill along with his book.
SPECIAL BULLETIN! ATTENTION! ATTENTION! ATTENTION! My Good Friend BILL CHAMBERS HAS A BOOK COMING OUT CALLED 'THE TORMENTRESS' coming out in june to a book store near you! His pre-Book launch will be on april 26 at 6:30 at the Black Orchid Bookstore. Click on the link for more details. All are invited!!!! BUY HIS BOOK! This man is a great friend a a good writer! 04/07/2005- THE VICTOR GRISCHLER AFFAIR Reporting back from The Victor Grischler Launch for his new book Suicide Squeeze. (Images to be forth-coming) Oh, the after party was an enjoyable event in and of itself. First the signing, where Jason Starr, Charlie (Carlito) Stella, Reed Ferrel Coleman, Victor's publicist, his confidant Scott, oh, and Ralph Pezzulo (made a guest appearance at the bar after) ,and a few others were treated the self-deprecating charm and wit of Victor Grischler. We all took pictures with Victor (oh wait till you see Charlie and the very provocative Victor, you naughty boyz you) and my images with Victor whom I had the pleasure of meeting in the BoucherCon in Toronto ( he asked me where the hat was, you know, everyone loves that hat, the one in the image above. Go figure ). We chatted, I spoke about my self-publishing venture with Victor (man, I've got to finish it. 3 steps from being done, please be patient). Anyway, in the after party, Victor and I got into a discussion about movies and both loved Kill Bill Vol. 1 & 2. When Victor Asked Reed about it, he said he didn't like Kill Bill. So with that, I called reed a Cozy writer ( translation, a pussy. IN the world of Mysteries and Hardboiled writing, nothing's worst than being called a Cozy) A heated discussion did incur, but by the end of the evening, all was love & kisses (invisible ones passed and blown between myself and Reed). But that's what happens with big, tough, he-man hardboiled writers like the group gathered at O'Flannagans. It was a good evening and fun was had by all. Wish ya'll were there. More Soon.. 03/15/2005- THE KEN BRUEN AFFAIR Reporting back from The Ken Bruen Launch for his new Book The Magdalen Martyrs. It was as enjoyable as the Stella Affair. The hit took place at the joint most'a you dirty mugs know as the Black Orchid Bookshop on 81st, eastside. Most of the regulars, Todd Robinson, David White, Charlie Stella, Laura Lippman (Japs-HAHAHAHAHAH inside joke, not meant in a bad way), Joe from the Black Orchid BookShop, and the rest of the crew (if I've forgotten anyone, I am sorry). After the signing, we moved the affair to O'flannagans a few blocks down where it was drinks, loud discussions, and the re-telling of TenSpeed (Me) & BrownShoe 's (todd) ejection out of a bookstore (and a great story it is). Wish ya'll were there. More Soon.. 03/03/2005- THE STELLA AFFAIR Reporting back from the Charlie Stella Launch for his new book CHEAP SKATE. I come to you bringing images from said even that shall make you forever slap yourself if you missed out on the festivities. Click On the newest Edition to my site, 'Friends Of OmenSpirits' to see the latest images (and some familiar) of my new friends, and latest exploits. More Soon..
October 1-4th The BoucherCon Affair Well, BoucherCon 2004 has come and gone. I had a good time at the convention and plan on going to the one in Chi-town next year. I got to shake hands with Anthony Neil Smith ( the man generous to publish my first short story On his site Plots With Guns) and Victor Grischler ( of GUN MONKEYS & PISTOL POETS FAME) who are a great couple of guys. I even got a shout out on a panel that Anthony was on, in reference to writers who pushed the envelop of what hardboild fiction was. I admit, I was very happy to be included in his dialogue. I had the opportunity to meet up with a gentleman whom I'd been in recent contact with, and whose writing I find to be both powerful, an a very fine credit to the genre we write, Mr. Lono Waiwaiole. A very fine gentleman, and a good guy to know. Making his acquaintance was one of the highlights of my week. Check out his Novels, Wiley's Lament, and Wiley's Shuffle, both out now. Click the link in blue above to read more about Mr. Waiwaiole. I pimped my first foray into the self-publishing arena with some bookmarks. That went pretty well. Toronto would not be the first place in my mind about going to again for a vacation. Very sterile place. It's the size of a city, but lacks the energy of one. Nothing personal to those whom live there. Todd Robinson ('THUG') had a few surprises thrown his way. The week started out crappy for him, but in the end, it came out better than he'd hoped. travel on over to his site by way of the THUG link above to find out more details. To all I'd met there, and to all I've gotten to reacquainted myself with, i was glad to see and meet you once again. Info on the Collection and ordering will be forth coming...... As with the last site, Thanks For coming ROBERT SPOTTED PONY LEE | |
